When I travel, especially on a cruise or an international vacation, I struggle with the balance of packing lightly and ensuring I have everything that I need. Because of this, I've created a little essential kit filled with travel-sized versions of things that I may need. While I'd encourage you to create a kit with items that you are most likely to need, I've provided inspiration below with my travel-sized vacation must-haves for an essentials kit.

A comment on sustainability - I am aware that these options aren't the most sustainable available. When looking for travel-sized must-haves, consider ways to pack more sustainably. I love using Cadence capsules (I purchased mine and also received some as a gift from the company) to pack my toiletries.
If you purchase the items listed below and have extras, you may consider splitting the pack with a friend or making kits for family members.

Travel-Sized Vacation Must-Haves for an Essentials Kit
Bug repellent
If I'm visiting somewhere on vacation where I know there will be mosquitoes or other pesky bugs, I pack a regular-sized bottle of bug repellent. But for a quick trip, or if I'm not sure I'll need a larger bottle, these bug repellent pads are a great option.

Sunscreen
If you plan to spend any time in the sun, you'll probably need a larger bottle of sunscreen. But for times when you aren't sure you are going to need it, these little packets are perfect to include in your essentials kit. I also have a packet in my purse in case I unexpectedly encounter sun exposure (like if I'm eating at a restaurant outside, for instance).

On The Go Wipes
If you've ever encountered a bathroom without toilet paper while traveling, you'll understand the need for these wipes. I've needed these on so many different occasions - from porta-potties to roadside restrooms. While they are billed as "flushable", I wouldn't risk it, especially when traveling.

Shout Wipes
It's pretty inevitable - if I wear something white, I'll probably spill something on myself. I love these Shout wipes, which easily remove most stains.

Safety Pins
Safety pins can always come in handy for a variety of purposes. Toss a few into your essential kit - you'll never know when you may need them.

Bandages
Cuts and scrapes inevitably happen when on vacation. Pack a few bandages so you'll have them on hand on vacation if you need them. While you can purchase travel bandage kits, I recommend buying a bigger box and just throwing a few into your essentials kit.

Blister Bandages
Vacations typically mean long days of walking. Regardless of the type of shoes you are wearing, you may find yourself with a blister. Blister bandages are better than a standard bandage, because they are more padded and comfortable.

Antibiotic gel
Another essential first-aid item is antibiotic gel. I use at least one of these packets every time I go on vacation. While a regular tube of this isn't too large, if you are traveling with only a carry-on bag, the small packets are easiest to bring.
Buy a box of 25 on Amazon.
Hydrocortisone Cream
For rashes and itchy bug bites, you'll want to pack some hydrocortisone cream. These packets include a good amount - you can typically use one more than once.
You can find a box of 25 on Amazon here.
Sting Relief
After getting stung by an unknown insect on a hike recently, I added these sting relief wipes to my essentials kit. Bring them on vacation, and toss them in your backpack when in the woods.

Toothbrush wipes
During long flight layovers, I often wish I had my toothbrush and toothpaste packed in my handbag. These wipes aren't enough for daily use, but they are easy to use in a pinch.
You can purchase a pack of 100 on Amazon.
Deodorant
Another item I'm typically looking for after a long flight is deodorant. I like having these wipes easily accessible.

Where To Put Everything
So once you've consolidated everything that you'd like in your essentials kit, it's time to figure out what to put them in. You can use whatever you'd like - a makeup bag, a pouch, or a plastic bag. Because I was making kits for gifts, I purchased these 16 photo storage boxes, which are the perfect size to hold everything.
Find the boxes here.
Once you put your kit together, you'll probably find that you'll use it for more than travel. I've also brought mine on day trips, to sports tournaments, and on weekend getaways.
