Inside the Howard Johnson Anaheim Hotel’s New House of the Retro Future Suite

In early 2020, I had the opportunity to stay at the Howard Johnson Anaheim Hotel and Water Playground, located across the street from Disneyland on South Harbor Boulevard. This family-friendly hotel is a fantastic option for anyone looking for a convenient, reasonably-priced hotel for a Disneyland vacation. In the summer of 2022, the Howard Johnson Anaheim Hotel introduced a brand new suite – the House of the Retro Future Suite.

Howard Johnson Anaheim Hotel’s New House of the Retro Future Suite

The Howard Johnson Anaheim Hotel and Water Playground is located about a 1/2 mile from the entrance of Disneyland. Originally opened in the 1960s, the hotel has been renovated with gorgeous mid-century accents. It has a nostalgic feel but with modern accents.

I had the opportunity to tour their brand-new, one-of-a-kind suite, the House of the Retro Future Suite. This two-room suite is a true step back in time. Walk through the door, and you’ll feel like you are on vacation in the 60s. The room even has its own retro 60s playlist you can access from home!

The House of the Retro Future Suite was based on the original Monsanto House of the Future, which was located in Disneyland’s Tomorrowland from 1957-1967. Retro features include multi-paned windows with a view of the Garden pool, an older-fashioned looking TV (but with a modern flat screen), gorgeous colorful artwork, seating by Modernica and Herman Miller, and retro-looking lighting by Restoration Hardware. There’s also a record player, perfect for playing some mood music to go along with the suite.

In addition to the mid-century design elements, there are modern accents as well. These include Amazon Alexa devices, voice-activated lighting and temperature controls, a mini-fridge, a retro microwave, and a Bluetooth-enabled bathroom mirror.

Suite Features

While the retro features are a lot of fun, there are some great practical features to the suite. This includes the following:

  • A small balcony facing the Garden Pool
  • Two queen beds
  • A bathtub
  • A shower
  • Two bathroom sinks
  • Two televisions
  • A desk with chair
Mid century modern credenza with drawers and doors, a lamp, and a globe.

Of course, you’ll probably be spending much of your time in the parks and not too much in the room. But you’ll definitely want to plan some free time so you can enjoy the suite. If you love mid-century modern style as much as I do, this suite is definitely something you’ll enjoy.
