10 Stunning Luxury Hotels in Zermatt, Switzerland

Zermatt Switzerland is a unique place. This quaint Swiss town, nestled among the Matterhorn and the Visp River, doesn’t allow standard passenger cars. As a result, it’s an incredibly walkable city, with horse-drawn carriages and tiny electric vehicles taking guests from the Zermatt Railway Station to their hotel. There are a surprising number of luxury hotels in Zermatt Switzerland, for a small destination.

Here are 10 stunning luxury hotels in Zermatt Switzerland for your next family vacation.

During our vacation in Zermatt (through Adventures by Disney), we stayed in the Mount Cervin Palace. We absolutely loved this hotel and would definitely recommend a stay there. We did see other hotels on this list but didn’t stay in them.

10 Stunning Luxury Hotels in Zermatt, Switzerland

Seasons in Zermatt

We stayed in Zermatt in July, right in the heart of the summer. Temperatures at that time ranged from high 60s to low 70s. We were able to wear short-sleeved shirts and were comfortable. When we moved to higher elevations, we wore sweatshirts and sweaters.

As you’d expect, Zermatt is also a popular destination in the winter season. If you are a skier, this is a great place to visit.

Getting to Zermatt

Because automobiles and buses aren’t permitted in Zermatt, it can be a little tricky to get there. Luckily, it’s easy to get there by train.

Guests taking a motor coach or driving can park in nearby Täsch and take a train ride right into the center of town to the Zermatt train station. These trains run frequently, so you’ll have plenty of options. From there, you can either walk to your hotel or use one of the small electric taxis (most hotels have courtesy vehicles).

If you are flying into Zermatt, you’ll probably want to come in through either Geneva Switzerland or Zurich Switzerland airports. From the airport, you can take a train right to the Zermatt train station.

What to look for in a Zermatt Hotel

When looking for a hotel, I’d recommend looking for a few different things. Even luxury hotels in Zermatt do not have air conditioning. It was a little warm during the day in our hotel room in July, but things cooled down quite a bit with the windows opened.

I don’t always recommend getting a hotel with a view, especially if you aren’t going to be in the room much. However, we had a Matterhorn view in our room and absolutely loved it.

You’ll also want to look at the hotel’s amenities. There are lots of restaurants within walking distance in Zermatt, so you won’t necessarily need an onsite restaurant. But, you may want to enjoy some pool or spa time, so check out those amenities before booking.

Like other European hotels, it can be difficult to find a room that fits an entire family. Instead, you’ll probably need two rooms.

Chalet Hotel Schönegg

This hotel, a small stylish boutique hotel, is a Relais & Chateau property. It is located on a hill overlooking Zermatt and guests can use a mountain elevator (Sunnegga Express funicular) to access the town center.

The Chalet Hotel Schönegg offers 39 rooms in the main building and 9 rooms they call “style” rooms (located in the Petit Chalet). These rooms offer more of an alpine style.

You’ll be able to choose the best room for you from their options, including rooms with views of the Matterhorn, suites, and quadruple family rooms. Amenities include a restaurant, a traditional bar, and a wine bar.

There’s also a spa area with two jacuzzis, a Finnish sauna, a steam room, an adventure shower, and a Kneipp basin. This is only open and available to guests of the hotel.

You can book the main building rooms here and the Petit Chalet-style rooms here.

CERVO Mountain Resort

The CERVO Mountain Resort is located about 10 minutes from the train station and the Zermatt town center. An elevator takes you up to the hotel lobby.

This mountain resort offers 54 rooms/suites and 7 lodges. Different room categories include the Nomad, Alpinist, and Huntsman. You are able to view the actual individual rooms on their website, which makes it very convenient when booking.

One of the most unique aspects of the CERVO Mountain Resort is the Mountain Ashram Spa. It offers treatments including facials and massages, as well as yoga and meditation.

The CERVO Mountain Resort also offers restaurants and bars, including Bazaar, Madre Nostra, and Ferdinand.

Mont Cervin Palace

During our visit to Zermatt, we spent several nights at the Mont Cervin Palace. It was one of our favorite resorts, due to the large rooms and beautiful balcony overlooking the Matterhorn. This is definitely among the best hotels in Zermatt.

The Mont Cervin Palace offers a variety of different room types, so you’ll want to check their website for descriptions and images before booking. Options include Alpine Style, Chalet Style, and family apartments.

During our stay, we had two Alpine-style suites. They were adjacent (but not connected) and had huge balconies with views of the Matterhorn. If you aren’t planning to spend too much time in the room, you can save money with a smaller room. We did, however, enjoy spending time on our private balcony.

The hotel also offers the Spa Nescens Zermatt. It includes an indoor pool, two whirlpools, a children’s pool, a Finnish sauna, a Biosauna, steam baths, and more. We didn’t have any time to take advantage of this area, but it did look impressive. Next time, I’ll spend a little more time at the hotel so I can fully take advantage of the amenities.

The Mont Cervin Palace has a central location right in Zermatt village, only a short walk from the train station and the shops/restaurants in the area. It also offers several dining options (some only open in the winter) including Grill Le Cervin, Le Restaurant, and Joseph’s Bar & Terrace. We also really enjoyed the breakfast, which included a buffet as well as some menu items.
