We live about 25 minutes from Boston, one of the best cities to visit with kids. While we do visit Boston frequently, for sporting events, museum visits, and of course – the airport, we don’t see it as a tourist might. We generally go in for what we need, and go home when we are done. In fact, in some cases, I feel that I’ve explored other cities more than Boston. It’s probably because I have a sense of urgency – I know that I have limited time. Perhaps we take Boston for granted. This past holiday break, decided to take a staycation in Boston. We spent a night at the Millennium Bostonian Hotel, located right in Faneuil Hall, and enjoyed playing tourist in our home city.
Why You Should Take a Staycation in Your Home City
If you haven’t spent an overnight in your home city for a vacation, it’s definitely something you should do. There are lots of reasons why you should take a staycation in your home city – here are a few:
- You can enjoy a vacation without the expense of traveling to a new location
- You can explore your city with no restrictions – no obligations at home, no need to drive back home
- You can take your time walking around, enjoying the small shops, restaurants, and cafes that you may miss if you just go into your city for one specific thing.
- You can take advantage of great deals – including package deals or last minute options – with no concern for flight prices.
Our Boston staycation was actually part of a longer New England road trip. During our trip, we traveled to Portland, Maine and New Haven, Connecticut, along with our Boston stay. We checked in to our hotel, and loved the quick walk across the street to Faneuil Hall. We’d never really spend any extended time there with our kids – it just never was something we had time to do. The kids loved visiting the shops and food stands, before we headed back to our hotel. At dinner time, we ventured over to the North End, where we had dinner at Gennaro’s at 5 North Square. After a quick stop at Modern Pastry to pick up delicious cannoli, we went back to our hotel room to enjoy them.
It was snowing the next morning, so we enjoyed breakfast at the hotel before exploring. Finally, we packed out and headed out, with promises to do a Boston staycation on a more frequent basis.
