My husband and I both have January birthdays, which often makes it difficult to celebrate. My husband’s birthday is right after the New Year, and we’re usually all celebrated out from Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. We usually plan a dinner out, but this year, due to some things that came up, we had to cancel. By February, after a series of snow storms, we were ready to get out of the house. We got my mother-in-law to watch the kids and dog for a night, and booked a special package of one of our favorite inns – the White Barn Inn. It included a night stay and their famed prix fix dinner, and I looked forward to this weekend for weeks.
Then came the snowy weather forecast. I was in denial all week. The hotel package we booked was not cheap, and it was also not refundable. If we had to cancel because of weather, we wouldn’t be able to afford to reschedule.
That morning, our babysitter – my mother-in-law – left her house nice and early to get to our house. One obstacle was cleared. We loaded up our car and headed out to this….
Luckily, Kennebunk, Maine is only an hour and a half away, so we drove very slowly, right behind this plow for a while.
The drive got a little scary – we even passed this bridge with snowy water coming right up to the edge.
It look at least twice the amount of time, but we finally arrived at the White Barn Inn. I’ve never been so happy to leave the car!
The weather was much better in Maine, but I was still glad to have arrived. Our room wasn’t ready, but we were able to relax in the living room with some complimentary port wine.
In the end, everything was okay, but it was really stressful. I won’t put myself in that position of booking a completely nonrefundable trip without having some sort of safety net – like travel insurance.
