After missing out on birthday meals last year and this year (Accutane last year, my daughter’s TV appearances this year), my husband and I decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year at the White Barn Inn in Kennebunkport, Maine. It had been two years since our last trip to the White Barn Inn, but we are now planning on making it an annual tradition. Since the White Barn Inn isn’t kid-friendly, our two children and dog spent the night with Grandma.
While the inn and service at this Relais & Chateaux property is absolutely amazing, the true draw here is the AAA Five Diamond, Forbes Five Star restaurant, located in the white barn adjacent to the Inn. The restaurant offers a four-course traditional meal or a nine-course chef’s tasting menu. We opted to go for the tasting menu with the accompanying reserve wine tasting.
The nine-course tasting menu is all chef’s choice, although we did receive the menu listing all of the food options. The menu changes seasonally, although items may change based upon availability. Overall, the meal took about 3 hours and there wasn’t one bite that wasn’t absolutely amazing.
Here were some of the items on the winter tasting menu at the White Barn Inn:
- Carpaccio of salmon with sweet mustard sauce and capers (my personal favorite)
- Espresso dusted bison sirlon on cognac and prune puree
- Olive poached local beef tenderloin with arugula and feta cheese tortellino and toasted pine nuts
- A selection of European and New England cheese
Overall, we had the nine courses in the tasting menu, plus an amuse buche and petit fours at the end of the meal.
In addition to the dinner, the Inn also offers a fabulous complimentary continental breakfast buffet for guests, as well as coffee, tea, port wine and pastries from 3-4:30pm daily. As you’d expect, both offer fabulous food. Lunch is also available as room service, if you’d prefer to stay at the Inn for the afternoon.
