I spent many summers working in Newport, RI, but surprisingly, had never traveled there with my kids. This spring, we had the opportunity to check out the “We Are Family” package at the Hotel Viking, located just a short walk from the downtown shopping/waterfront area of Newport. After driving the hour and a half from our home in Massachusetts, we settled in on a beautiful spring weekend.
The Hotel Viking offers valet parking, an on-site restaurant (One Bellevue), an indoor pool, a full-service spa, a fitness center, and extensive event space, along with 209 guest rooms. Our room, which featured two queen beds, was extremely comfortable, although a bit small (comparable to other historic hotels). The room includes an honor bar, small fridge (stocked with honor bar items), Keurig coffee maker, hairdryer, and small desk.
The staff of the hotel, from the valets to the restaurant staff, was incredibly friendly and helpful. We had breakfast in the hotel twice and dinner once, and enjoyed the food. It’s a quick walk to the downtown area, where we shopped and ate most of our meals, and an easy drive to the famed Newport Mansions. We went to the Breakers (where I worked in college) and Marble House, and the kids loved them (separate post to follow). There were two different weddings going on during our stay, but we didn’t have any noise issues at all.
While we were at the Hotel Viking, we took advantage of the “We are Family” package. The package, which starts at $189 per night ($409 in the summer), includes the following:
- A disposable camera for the kids to take photos of their Newport adventure
- A fun family board game (We received Big Picture Apples to Apples, but the game is subject to change)
- Complimentary breakfast for children (with paying adults)
- A snack basket for the kids
- Hotel Viking coloring book with crayons
- A 10% discount at the Hotel Viking spa
The package is a great way to reconnect as a family. We played the game a bunch of times between activities, and the kids really enjoyed it. We also loved staying in the hotel – it’s such a beautiful place, and is so convenient to all of the activities in Newport.
