Review of the Porto Elounda Resort in Crete, Greece

When I booked flights out of Crete for our family vacation this past summer, I had a difficult time getting a good flight out on the last day of our Adventures by Disney tour. We decided to stay one additional night at the resort – the Porto Elounda Resort in Crete, Greece. It wasn’t until our trip got closer, that I realized how nice the resort is. In total, we ended up spending five nights at the Porto Elounda, and I probably could have spent even more. It’s a beautiful, relaxing resort with loads of amenities and activities for families.

Review of the Porto Elounda Resort in Crete, Greece

We arrived at Porto Elounda in the evening, after taking the passenger ferry from Santorini. While this beach and golf resort is a large, sprawling resort, it’s got such a unique appearance – almost looking like it was built into a cave. The resort is located along a cliff, making the lobby on the 4th floor. The walk down to the beach and pool area is downhill, but not too difficult. Because of the way it’s built, many of the rooms have beautiful views of the gorgeous turquoise blue sea water of the Aegean. It’s in the center of three resorts – including sister resorts the Elounda Mare and the Elounda Peninsula All Suite Hotel.

Rooms at the Porto Elounda Resort in Crete

This was the only hotel during our Greek vacation where we had two separate hotel rooms (with a connecting door). One room had a king bed, while the kids’ room had two twin beds. Rooms offer large balconies, in-room safes, lots of space for clothes, makeup mirror, televisions, hair dryers, large tubs with shower head, and complimentary WiFi. The beds were very comfortable, and with a large console and small couch with table, there was plenty of room for us in the two rooms. All rooms come with a welcome amenities – ours was a bowl of fruit and large water bottle in each room, and turndown service is offered (with complimentary water bottles). BluRay players are located in each room, and disks are available for borrowing at the front desk.

There are other room types available at the Porto Elounda, including rooms with private and/or shared pools, suites, and villas.

Location of the Porto Elounda Resort in Crete

The Porto Elounda Golf and Spa Resort is located in Elounda, which is a town on the eastern side of the island. It’s about an hour and fifteen minutes from Heraklion, which is home to the airport and port. The town of Elounda has loads of fun shops and restaurants, and is accessible via an eight Euro cab ride from the resort.

Amenities at the Porto Elounda Resort in Crete

The amenities at this beautiful resort are definitely the highlight. It boasts a gorgeous, private sandy beach located a short walk from the rooms. We spent most of our time in the beach chairs, where we were able to watch the kids at the beach and at the pool. Bar and food service is also available right to the beach chairs, and the food is reasonably priced. On our last day, we enjoyed a nice lunch right from our lounge chairs. There are also some fun activities each day at the beach, including a DJ, and games for kids. Guests can also, for an additional fee, choose to book water activities, including water skiing, jet skiing, and snorkeling.

The resort also offers a Kids Ark on property, which includes a creche (kids’ nursery) and a kids’ club – both for an additional fee. The ark has a a few small waterslides. Guests traveling with young children can make a request in advance of their visit to have their room baby proofed, and/or to rent baby supplies.

While I didn’t get to visit it, the resort’s spa is definitely a big draw. This multiple-award-winning spa features a variety of treatments, including manicures, facials, and massages. I wasn’t sure how much free time I would have, so I didn’t book a treatment, unfortunately. Private fitness classes are available for booking, including Pilates and TRX. The resort also has a fitness center for guests.

Golfers will love the 9-hole par-3 course that is located right on property. There’s also a pro shop and a PGA pro on site. If you want to explore via bicycle, bike rentals are offered Monday through Saturday.

Food at the Porto Elounda Resort in Crete

There are a number of restaurants located across the three properties. We started breakfast each morning at the beautiful Nafsika restaurant, which is located right over one of the pools. The breakfast buffet is filled with delicious foods that will appeal to the whole family, including eggs, cheeses, fruit, cakes, and crepes (my kids’ favorite).

We only had the opportunity to dine at one of the on-property restaurants for dinner, and we choose Koh. Koh is a Pan-Asian restaurant (pictured above) with gorgeous views of the Aegean Sea. Other options include Aglio e Olio (Italian food), which is located by the pool, the Yacht Club Restaurant (Greek Seafood), and the Old Mill (fine dining). Most of the restaurants have a dress code prohibiting shorts and flip flops, so pack accordingly.

The resort also offers special theme nights for an added fee. While we were there, they hosted a fish night and a Cretan night.

Service at the Porto Elounda Resort in Crete

Everyone I encountered at the Porto Elounda, from the restaurant staff to the concierge, were incredibly helpful and friendly. The concierge assisted us several times with booking cabs and making restaurant reservations, and the process was very easy. The resort also offers an inter-resort shuttle – perfect if you are dining at one of the other two resorts.

I’ll always look fondly on the five nights that we spent at the Porto Elounda Golf Resort and Spa in Crete, and if I ever return to Crete, I’ll definitely want to stay there again. You can read more reviews here.
