Are you looking for a hotel where everything around you caters to children? Do you want to stay at a place that you don’t have to leave for the entire trip? On my recent trip to Colonial Williamsburg, I spent a night at the Great Wolf Lodge Williamsburg, a place that was made with families in mind.
Your experience with the Great Wolf Lodge starts at check-in, when you see this fun-looking entrance. Every member of the family receives a wristband, which opens your hotel room and gives you access to the indoor water park (available only to resort guests and birthday parties). The lodge theme is carried throughout the resort, from the restaurants to the rooms and suites.
Rooms at the Great Wolf Lodge are comfortable and clean, and guests can choose from a standard room to a family suite (some with lofts). My room, a king-bed room with pull-out couch, was extremely comfortable and roomy. Unfortunately, I didn’t have toiletries in my room, but after talking with other guests, I think it was an oversight.
Recreation options include the indoor water park (one of the nicest I’ve seen), a kids’ spa (fun, but a BIG splurge), storytime, an adult spa, a small bowling alley, a large arcade, and a really fun interactive game called MagiQuest. Although I wasn’t traveling with my kids, I took a close look at the MagiQuest game, and know that it would be something that my kids would love. It’s a gender-neutral game that appeals to kids of all ages – I saw boys and girls from preschoolers to tweens (and even a few parents) running around with their special magic wands.
So, what are the negatives? Well, aside from the water parks, almost everything else is a la carte, making it a potentially expensive vacation. There are bundles you can purchase with some of the more popular activities, like arcade tokens and MagiQuest wands. But, it’s important that you properly budget for these added expenses, because they’ll certainly add up. Regardless, I know my kids would just love the Great Wolf Lodge, and I’m hoping to take them to one soon!
