When I found out that the Travel Media Showcase was going to be hosted at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine, Texas this year, I was thrilled. I’ve always enjoyed my stay in the other Gaylord Resorts, especially when I’m attending a conference or convention. This stay was fabulous – here’s what you can expect to find if you stay there.

Review: The Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine, Texas
The Texan, one of the four (soon to be five) Gaylord Resorts in the United States, offers over 1,300 hotel rooms, 7 restaurants/bars/cafes, a spa, an indoor and outdoor pool, an outdoor waterpark, a fitness center, and an arcade. It’s practically a city within one building, with beautiful atrium ceilings that make you feel like you are outdoors. I definitely recommend that every family stay at a Gaylord Resort at least once. It’s such a unique experience.
If you are attending a conference there, you’ll find the conference facilities within the same building, so you don’t need to go outside at all. Like the other Gaylord Resorts, it’s very impressive and unlike any other hotel that you’ve seen. It’s really beautiful and unique. The interior gives the flavor of Texas, with a miniature (but still large) Alamo facade and much more.
The Rooms at the Resort
The Texan offers a variety of hotel rooms. I had a room with two double beds and an external balcony. Other rooms include balconies that face the indoor atrium. Rooms offer two bottles of water, an iron, a hairdryer, a small work desk, a mini fridge, a coffee maker, and plenty of electrical outlets. I found the room to be very comfortable.
Although my room was near the elevator, it was quiet and I slept well. If it’s within your budget, I definitely recommend getting a room with a balcony overlooking the atrium. We stayed in one at the Gaylord Opryland in Nashville, and really enjoyed having that extra space and beautiful view. If you are traveling with children, they will especially enjoy having the balcony and the views it offers.
The Restaurants at the Resort
The resort offers two coffee shops (serving Starbucks coffee), a coastal Italian restaurant, a Mexican restaurant, the Old Hickory Steakhouse (common among all of the Gaylord Resorts), an Old Hickory wine bar, a lobby bar, a nightclub, and a sports bar. I enjoyed coffee from the coffee shop each morning, as well as a meal at the Mexican restaurant. All were delicious.
The Old Hickory wine bar is a great spot for a quick bite or a glass of wine. Room service is also available, if you’d prefer to stay in your room. If you are traveling without kids, the on-property Glass Cactus Nightclub is a fun spot to listen to live music.
The Gaylord Texan Resort Convention Center
Adjacent to the resort is a huge convention center. It’s attached, so you don’t have to walk outside, and includes a number of large convention halls and rooms. If you are visiting the resort for a conference or convention, it’s very convenient. There is quite a bit of walking however, so definitely be prepared with comfortable shoes.
Kid-Friendly Amenities at the Gaylord Texan Resort
The resort is completely kid-friendly, with loads of activities for families. This summer, they have been hosting an Alice in Wonderland themed SummerFest event, complete with scavenger hunt, Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, sand sculptures, and much more.
They also host an annual holiday event, A Lone Star Christmas. The theme changes on an annual basis, and the event includes the popular ICE! event, ice skating, tubing, and much more. The resort is decorated for the holidays, and is truly stunning.
In addition to these special events, my kids just love wandering around the atriums of the Gaylord Resorts. They are so stunning, and are really fun for kids to see.
The resort also offers an outdoor waterpark – the 10 acre Paradise Springs, which is open in the summer, and recently underwent a $5 million dollar expansion. Admission is complimentary for hotel guests (up to a limit of 4 per guest room), and the waterpark includes a lazy river, family lagoon, and three water slides. It’s a great place to cool down.
This resort is located in Grapevine, Texas, between Fort Worth and Dallas. Grapevine offers some wonderful family activities and delicious resorts. In addition, you’ll be conveniently located between the two cities if your travel plans include either of them.
