Located less than 4-hours from Boston, MA and NYC, Lake George, NY is a great family vacation destination in both summer and winter. This year, we decided to visit right after Christmas, but my whole family wanted to pass on skiing. So, instead, we found some fun things to do in Lake George with kids in winter.
Lake George Area Winter Family Vacation
Our hotel, the Six Flags Great Escape Lodge and Water Park (see review here), was a great home base for our vacation. It offers an indoor water park, which is also open to the public for a separate admission, along with an arcade room, kids’ club, and kids’ activities. While we saw some families enjoying the water park for the day, we preferred to visit for a couple of hours each morning.
Tubby Tubes is a can’t miss tubing park located about 20 minutes away in Lake Luzerne, NY. Arrive early, and plan to make reservations for your spot in advance. This is a popular place! While we were there, they had four slides open – one snow and three synthetic. Tickets can be purchased for either a 2-hour period or for the full day. We felt that 2 hours was enough for our family, but my daughter easily could have stayed for another hour. It’s definitely lots of fun. Helmets aren’t required, but they are allowed if you’d like to bring your own.
The Hyde Collection Art Museum and Historic House was such a pleasant surprise for us. Tucked away in Glens Falls, NY (about 10 minutes away) is this beautiful three-house estate and art museum. Packed with treasures including pieces by Rubens, Picasso, Rembrandt, van Gogh, and Homer, this museum is a hidden gem. My kids really enjoyed seeing all of this priceless art displayed, and my husband and I were thrilled with the low admission price ($8 for adults and free for kids). I definitely recommend visiting.
Lake George is also home to many popular outlet shops, including Under Armour, Coach, Reebok, the Children’s Place, and Osh Kosh. We found some fabulous prices on clothing for the whole family, so it’s definitely worth a stop.
Overall, we had a great time on our Lake George area winter family vacation, and will definitely consider doing it again next winter break.
