When I told my best friend that we were headed to Hilton Head for the week with the kids, her reaction was one I’ve heard before; “Hilton Head?” she questioned. “With kids? We always go to Myrtle Beach because they have more activities for kids.”
Hilton Head for Families
This isn’t the first time I’ve heard someone balk at the idea of bringing kids to Hilton Head. Hilton Head is known for their beautiful golf courses, low country cuisine and nature preserve. This contrasts starkly with Myrtle Beach, which is known for their amusement park, boardwalk and Ripley’s Aquarium.
I’m about to let the secret out of the bag, but Hilton Head has a plethora of activities for kids and families. Whether you want your kids to learn, play or relax, the entire family can enjoy a vacation at Hilton Head.
Take your kids to the Sandbox: An Interactive Children’s Museum for a day of learning and adventure. Little ones from infant to eight years old will enjoy the exhibits at this museum. Stations throughout the museum are themed to capture your child’s attention and expand their horizon with imaginative play. Some of the exhibits mirror everyday activities, such as the faux banking center, others provide insight into jobs around town, including a pilot and construction worker. There are also activities to engage their minds, bodies and spirit. Kids love the T-Rex climbing wall, sandbox and aquarium. This is a great rainy day activity.
Hilton Head is known for their world-class quality golf courses, including Harbour Town Golf Links, home to the RBC Heritage, South Carolina’s only PGA TOUR event. But little ones don’t care so much about the course designed by the famed golf course designer, Pete Dye, or the eco-friendly turf at May River Golf Club or even Palmetto Dunes, which won South Carolina’s “Golf Course of the Year” award in 2003. But they do care about the fun atmosphere at Pirate’s Island Adventure Golf miniature golf course. Families can choose between two courses that offer varying levels of difficulty. The atmosphere is fun, complete with pirate ships, skeletons and Blackbeard on the course. This was my son’s favorite part of our vacation!
Hilton Head offers many water excursions, but my favorite is the Dolphin & Nature Tour. This tour will take you through Broad Creek on a covered pontoon boat and you can enjoy seeing dolphins, sea turtles, pelicans and more. We went on this tour and were amazed at the number of dolphins we saw. We even saw a mom and her baby swim right next to the boat. Our guide was wonderful, providing commentary on the nature, wildlife and homes we saw on the tour. The entire experience was relaxing, educational and just plain fun.
