When booking a hotel room, it can often be challenging to know if you are getting the absolute best deal. There are lots of different websites that you can book a hotel room on, and comparing rates is often challenging. Room Key, a website that was founded as a collaboration between six large hotel chains, is offering a new browser extension. This free extension, called Scout, makes it easy for you to determine when it is cheaper to book directly with the hotel chain.
What is Room Key?
Room Key is a website that can compare rates of over 60 hotel brands. They have access to loyalty rates for these various brands. It’s not a booking engine, however. Instead, when you find the hotel that you want, you can click through and book your hotel directly on the property’s website. It’s the only website that aggregates loyalty rates in one place.
What are the Benefits of Booking a Hotel Directly?
There are plenty of benefits of booking a hotel directly, and it’s especially good when you can combine that with the best rate. By booking directly with the hotel, you are the customer of the hotel. That can make it easier when making arrangements, or if you need to make special requests or modifications. Cancellations especially can be difficult or not possible if you don’t book directly through the hotel.
You often need to book directly through the hotel to get loyalty points. If you frequently travel, those points can definitely add up. It’s always good to earn points whenever you can. Special perks may also be offered for guests booking directly – although these definitely can vary by hotel. Some examples include late check-outs and complimentary WiFi.
How to Install Scout
While you can definitely go through the Room Key website to access those loyalty rates, the Scout browser extension definitely makes it easier. To install, go to the download page. It’s currently available just for Chrome, but other options for Firefox and Safari are in the works.
Once the extension is downloaded and installed, it’s ready to use. When you are on certain booking websites, the extension will compare the exact dates and hotels and let you know if they find a better rate. The default setting is that the notification only triggers when a rate is the same or lower. If Scout doesn’t find a better rate, no notification will appear. In some instances, they aren’t able to display the exact rate, but will show that the rate is less than what you are currently looking at.
Once you click on the notification, you’ll be brought directly to the site to book. According to Room Key, in March 2018, Scout users saw an average saving of $13.30 per night when booking direct.
