Those of us living in the Boston area struggled with some many major winter storms last year. I was constantly checking the weather to see when the steady stream of storms would stop. That type of snow definitely puts a damper on family road trips – it was hard to know when it was safe to drive out for a weekend adventure. This winter, I’m prepared (although I’m NEVER happy to deal with that level of snow). I downloaded the SnowCast app on my iPhone, and will be using it to check the snow forecast, get alerts, and see the upcoming radar. SnowCast is available in the Apple app store for a small fee. With the app, you can see what the snow forecast is now, later in the day, or over the upcoming 24 hours. You just give the app permission to see your location, and you’ll get this screen when you open the app. It’s got the high and low temps for the day in the upper right corner, and the snow forecast in the middle of the screen. Luckily, we don’t have snow in the forecast today, but if we did, the bottom half of the screen would show the snow levels. If you click the radar button in the bottom corner of the screen, a six-hour radar forecast is shown. Although we aren’t getting snow in Eastern Massachusetts, you can see that there’s snow in the forecast for Northern New England. That’s especially helpful for road trips, and you can actually move the map around to see the forecast for other areas too. The app is so easy to use, and has a clean, simple-to-read interface. In addition, you’ll receive alerts for current NOAA winter weather warnings and advisories. That’s especially useful for your current location, so you’ll know whether to stay put or head out on your road trip.
