Here at Family Travel Magazine, we generally write about kid-friendly hotels that are unique and different. So while I do stay in chain hotels frequently, I don’t always write about them, especially if they aren’t especially unique. The benefit of a chain hotel – consistency – can sometimes be its downfall.
So I was quite surprised to see all of the wonderful family-friendly amenities during our recent stay at the Comfort Inn Plattsburgh NY in the Adirondacks, and I knew I’ve have to share a review here. It’s so impressive to see a chain hotel that offers such fabulous family friendly amenities and is so unique.
Note: We originally visited this hotel in 2012, and as I update it in 2019, my kids still talk about it. It’s surprising that a chain hotel made such an impression on them.
Disclosure: My stay at the Comfort Inn Plattsburgh NY was complimentary for purposes of review. All opinions are my own.
Comfort Inn Plattsburgh Review
Last year, right after Christmas, we visited the Lake Champlain region of New York to check out Ausable Chasm in the winter and to do some beginner skiing. During our visit, we stayed at the Comfort Inn and Suites Plattsburgh NY, a hotel located near the Plattsburgh International Airport.
This city on the Adirondack Coast along Lake Champlain offers family-friendly activities in summer and winter. It’s also about twenty miles from the Canadian/United States border, so you can also visit Canada during your stay. Be sure to bring along your passport, so that you have the option to cross the border.
Rooms at the Comfort Inn Plattsburgh
We had a king suite at the Comfort Inn Plattsburgh, which was one large room. It includes a king bed, a pull-out sofa bed, a dining area with a table, microwave, and refrigerator, and a large bathroom with a shower and whirlpool bath. The room itself is huge, and offered plenty of room for our family. Everything is very new, and extremely clean.
The only issue I’d have about the room is the location, which was right across from the weight room and adjacent to the small water park. Noise wasn’t a huge issue, but we could definitely hear sounds from both locations – especially the weight room. Overnight, however, the room was very quiet.
There are other rooms available at the hotel, including king bed rooms, 2 queen bed rooms, accessible rooms, and efficiency rooms. Standard amenities in the room include refrigerators, microwaves, coffee makers, and free WiFi.
Amenities at the Comfort Inn Plattsburgh NY
While the rooms are relatively standard, although very generously sized, we were completely surprised to see how fabulous the hotel amenities are for families with kids.
The small indoor water park (officially called a splash park) is perfect for families with little ones. It includes two water slides (both spanning two floors) and a small splash area. My five-year old son and my seven-year old daughter loved it, and wouldn’t leave. It wasn’t too crowded – surprising since local families are invited to attend for a small fee. The only downside was that they were slow on refreshing the towels. Older kids may find it a little boring, but younger kids will love it.
But, as fun as the indoor splash park was, my kids loved Champy’s FunZone Family Entertainment Center even more. It includes an indoor 9-hole miniature golf course, a two-lane bowling alley (sized for kids), and loads of arcade games. My kids loved the FunZone so much that we had to visit every night of our stay. An additional fee applies to play the games, bowl, and golf.
The Comfort Inn and Suites Plattsburgh also offers a full exercise facility, which is complimentary for hotel guests. Eclipse Fitness is a full-service fitness center, and includes steam rooms and saunas along with changing/locker facilities. It goes well beyond a standard hotel gym, so be sure to pack your exercise clothes so you can work out during your vacation.
Restaurants at the Comfort Inn and Suites in Plattsburgh
There are also two on-site restaurants at the Comfort Inn Plattsburgh. Our regular breakfast stop during our vacation was Perkins Restaurant and Bakery, a chain diner offering comfort food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There’s also a full-service bar.
There’s also the Plattsburgh Brewing Company, which offers house brewed beer, a wine bar, and a full bar. They also offer a full menu and lots of flat screen TVs to catch whatever game happens to be on.
If you are traveling through the Plattsburgh area with kids, I’d definitely recommend a stay at the Comfort Inn.
