Do you have kids that love art and books? Abilene, Texas will host the sixth annual Children’s Art and Literary Festival (CALF Festival) June 8 – 10, 2017. This family-friendly event showcases the importance of art and literacy throughout the community. There are many activities and events that take place over the course of the festival including book signings, a story book parade, theatrical performances, live entertainment, a petting zoo, and more! The festival also hosts several workshops to inspire you and get your own creative juices flowing. Workshops include Write and Illustrate Your Own Storybook, Pen & Ink Illustration, and Digital Character Creation, to name a few. There is truly something for everyone, young and old, at this event.
Each year, the CALF hosts a children’s book illustrator in conjunction with the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature’s (NCCIL) summer exhibition. This year the featured illustrator is Garth Williams who is known for many popular books including Stuart Little, Charlotte’s Web, and the Little House book series. The NCCIL will feature original artwork by Garth Williams as well as unveil five sculptural vignettes based on his drawings in the new Adam-Spalding Storybook Garden. All ages are also invited to participate in a costume contest by dressing up as their favorite character from a book illustrated by Garth Williams.
CALF Festival Passes are required for most activities. Space is limited in workshops so advanced sign up is required.
