Last March, I visited Detroit, Michigan for the first time ever. While I wasn’t sure what to expect, I was so thrilled with everything that I experienced and definitely recommend visiting Detroit with kids. Need convincing? Here are 6 reasons to visit Detroit!
The Henry Ford Museum, located in Dearborn, Michigan is part of the larger Henry Ford complex. As the most visited tourist attraction in Michigan, it’s absolutely a must-see for families. The museum, which focuses on American ideas and innovation, offers some important memorabilia from American history, including the Lincoln Chair, the Kennedy Limo, and the Rosa Parks bus. It’s such a great way to introduce children to American history, and it’s a place where you could easily spend the day.
During my stay in Detroit, I was so incredibly impressed by the delicious food we got to eat. From Michael Symon’s Roast in our hotel (the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel) to the fabulous food at our Greektown restaurant Santorini Estiatorio, Detroit’s food scene is surprisingly wonderful.
Prices in Detroit are great in comparison with other major cities. My hotel, the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel, offers rates of about $185-$300 per night. As one of the best hotels in the city, that rate is quite affordable. In addition, package deals are also offered, often in conjunction with sporting events.
Detroit is very accessible via car to guests in the Midwest, and now that JetBlue is flying through Detroit, it’s also more accessible via air.
The Rouge Factory Tour is another must-see in Detroit. One of the production facilities of America’s fastest selling vehicle – the Ford F150, the Rouge Factory operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.. After viewing a historical 11-minute movie, guests are able to walk around a path around the perimeter of about half of the factory. It’s quiet and clean, and guests aren’t required to wear hard hats or ear protection.
The Motown Museum, located in the original Hitsville USA building is an essential place for any music fan to visit. Guests to the museum first view a movie, then are brought through the museum on a one-hour guided tour. Much of the original memorabilia from the studio remains, including much of the famed Studio A.
