You’ve waited all year for summer to arrive so you can head to the beach and stick your toes in the sand, but there is so much more to a beach vacation than soaking up the sun and splashing in the surf! Though of course you’ll want to be sure to have plenty of time to kick back in the sand with a book or grab a boogie board and catch a few waves, here are a few things that you simply must try while you’re visiting the shore.
5 Things You Must Do During Your Beach Vacation
Fly a Kite
Ocean breezes are no myth. There is no better place in the world to launch a kite and watch it soar than on the beach. Bring a kite from home or head to the main drag and you’ll find beach stores galore that sell a wide variety of kites for fliers of all experience levels. You may even be able to find a shop that specializes in kites and similar toys!
Go Shell Collecting
In the morning before the beach fills up or in the evening after the crowds die down, make time to take a long walk on the beach and collect some beautiful shells. As you stroll, also be on the lookout for sea glass. Pieces of sea glass are the brightly colored remnants of broken bottles that have been worn smooth by the surf. The best time to hunt for shells and sea glass is after a strong storm that has washed plenty of interesting things up onto the sand.
Play Mini Golf
Nearly every beach town has at least one miniature golf course. There may even be many to choose from! Head out in the evening when it has cooled off or on a cool, cloudy day when it might not be the best time for sunbathing. The whole family will enjoy spending time together in friendly competition to see who gets the first hole in one.
Build the Perfect Sandcastle
No trip to the beach is complete without building a fabulous creation in the sand. Whether you build with classic pails and shovels or buy intricate sand molds to get the job done, everyone can put their own personal touch on your family’s castle. If you don’t have the right tools along for the job, try making a drip castle by picking up handfuls of wet sand and letting it slowly drip through your fingers. It creates a really cool effect as the sand builds up into tall towers.
Play Some Games in the Sand
Bring along a frisbee, football, or paddle ball set for some extra fun in the sand. Get the whole family into the game and enjoy the challenge of playing some of your favorites on the shifting sand. Then, the kids can make some new friends among the families who have set up camp nearby for some friendly competition while the grownups relax and soak up the sun. Just be sure to be courteous of other beachgoers as you play!
There is so much to do when visiting the beach, whether you’re there on a day trip or spending an entire week’s vacation! Take time to explore all that the local area has to offer and enjoy all of the natural beauty that can be found during any trip to the shore.
