Vacation Canceled Because of Hurricane Irene? Try a Staycation!

We were supposed to travel to New Hampshire this weekend, for our last weekend family vacation before the kids headed to school this Wednesday.  But, with Hurricane Irene headed up the coast hitting New England sometime Saturday night/Sunday morning, we decided not to risk it and canceled our trip.  I was disappointed.  The kids were disappointed.  My husband had time off.  So what to do?  We decided to do a short staycation in our home city of Boston!

We started the day at the Boston Museum of Science, located right in Boston, on the Charles River.  It wasn’t too crowded because it was a weekday, and so they really got to experience every hand-on exhibit with no crowds or lines.  We also decided to visit the newly renovated Charles Hayden Planetarium to see the show “Across the Universe: Live!”  The kids loved this narrated trip through the universe.

After our museum experience, we decided to visit Boston’s North End for a late lunch/early dinner.  We ended up at Gennaro’s Five North Square, where my kids loved the grilled pizza (I had my staple of linguine and clam sauce).  The food is excellent, and it’s in such a nice location.

Tomorrow, we’ll do some more local exploring, before we prepare for Hurricane Irene’s arrival.
