During the week, I pretty much run the household. I prepare school lunches and oversee homework. I drop the kids off at school, volunteer in the classroom, and then after school, I pick them up and bring them to their various activities, including Girl Scouts, basketball, soccer, science, Spanish, and swimming lessons. It’s a very busy week, and the weekends aren’t any easier. My job, as editor of this site and Mom’s Favorite Stuff, involves a LOT of travel, which I love. But, sometimes I’ve found that it can put a bit of strain on my family. That’s one of the reasons why I recently had to cancel my annual trip to Walt Disney World for the Moms Panel reunion. My daughter begged me to stay home, and it’s really hard for me to justify a “just-for-fun” trip when I go on so many work trips.
In November, I’ll be taking off for a weekend to attend the Family Travel Conference in Dallas. I’m so excited to attend the conference, because there’s still so much that I have to learn about travel writing. I’ll also get to spend some time with my favorite Traveling Moms, which will be great because I haven’t done that since the Disney Fantasy Preview Cruise.
But, I have to prepare the family this time. So, I plan to spend lots of quality time with the kids before I leave. I’ve also found a great Pirate play going on that weekend, so I’ll have my husband bring them. Keeping the kids busy that weekend is most important. Once we get past this weekend, we have two family vacations planned shortly after, so we’ll get lots of quality time after the trip too.
How do you prepare your family for a weekend away?

Looking forward to this too, as well as meeting and learning from great travel writers like yourself!
