The picture to the left is me, sometime in the late 70s/early 80s, at Santa’s Village in New Hampshire (can you see my cool rainbow suspenders?). Back in my childhood, my family would regularly take family road trips during school vacations – we’d usually travel to either New Hampshire or Niagara Falls. My parents would load up our Volkswagen Jetta (with a “shell-type carrier on the roof) with our luggage, pack a gigantic cooler full of snacks and drinks (which my sister and I would use as a footrest), and then head off on our journey. Of course, our trip was full of bathroom stops and cries of “Are we there yet?”. In fact, I can’t really even remember how my sister and I could have possible kept ourselves entertained. We had no handheld games, no DVD players, and no iPads. But I have fond memories of those journeys – it’s true that the road trip is definitely part of the vacation memories.
We visited Santa’s Village a few times, and I remember taking pictures in front of those fun characters – like the bunny pictured to the left – every time. Alamo asked me to write about family road trips then and now, and in my “now” post next week, you’ll see that I still visit Santa’s Village, but now with my own kids.
Back then, we didn’t rent a car for our trip, but I sure wish we did, because we were cramped in that Volkswagen with the big cooler in the backseat. If you are looking to rent a car for your next family road trip, Alamo operates 171 kiosks at 63 U.S. locations and is the official rent-a-car of Walt Disney World® Resort and Disneyland® Resort. You can also get at least an additional 10% discount on your rentals by joining the Insiders program. Alamo is also offering Family Travel Magazine readers a great giveaway worth $206.96.
The gift pack includes the following:
- Nikon Cool Pix L26
- $100 AMEX gift card
- “1000 Places To see Before You Die” by Patricia Schultz
- 16oz Wake-up Coffee Mug
- Relaxed Old Cap
Enter via the Rafflecopter, and make sure you let us know your favorite travel memory from your childhood in your comment. Giveaway ends 12/21 at 12:01am.
Disclosure: Alamo provided me with a prize pack of my own as a thank you for writing this post. However, the views and opinions expressed here are purely my own.

I remember a roadtrip to Florida. We drove straight through the night and got there in about 22 hours!
We went sailing for a week every summer as a family. Crazy times but tons of memories.
My favorite family travel memory is when my family traveled to Aruba for my sisters Wedding in 2007
My favorite travel memory is the trip to WDW in the 7th grade where my parents let me plan the *entire* trip.
We drove 4 hours every summer to our cabin in upstate New York.
But the car rides I remember most were west, to Ohio and then Kentucky, to visit my mom’s sister and her family. We played the license plate game in the car, and my brothers and I would fight with each other in the backseat. We’d listen to 8-tracks of Johnny Cash and Abba. When it got late, we’d stop at what my mom called, her eyes shining with excitement, “Roadhouses”–basically, roadside taverns, where it would be dim inside. I think we had dinner there and were sleepy.
My favorite memory is when my youth group decided we wanted to go to Disney World, did all of the fundraising ourselves, planned the trip, and had a blast.
Camping every summer
Traveling down to Florida from Ohio — my sister had to sit by herself because she’d annoy us so much!

My dad worked at night so the few times we took vacation to the beach we would drive all night. Dad would be exhausted that first day but still always had a blast!
I loved it when my family went to see Mt Rushmore with my best friend and her family. Was so memorable because I hadn’t seen my friend in over 4 years.
Once we were at some tiny amusement park on a family vacation. Dog Patch maybe? Anyway, my parents were letting me ride things by myself for one of the first times. The first ride I got on, I liked so much, and the park was so empty, the operator just told me to ride as much as I wanted. I didn’t have to get back in line. I rode like 4 times in a row before my dad showed up in a panic thinking I was lost or hurt somewhere. I was just having an awesome time. And was at the age that his worry seemed hilarious to me. hehe.

I remember visits to Walt Disney World over the years with my parents. Some years we would simply stay there, others we ventured off to Circus World, Cyprus Gardens, Sea World, and even went to Universal Studios when it first opened. I also recall going to Hawaii for my father’s 40th birthday. Then on the way back we stayed in LA for a Dodgers game (and days at Disneyland) and the NY Yankees were in our hotel. So many memories.

The first time we brought the boys to Disney World. We walked up Main Street in the Magic Kingdom and their eyes were wide and mouths open as they saw the castle approaching. Then they saw, in front of the castle, a show being performed. On stage were Mickey, Donald, Goofy, and other favorite characters. Their little minds were blown and they’ve been addicted to Disney (just like Mom and Dad) ever since.

Some of my favorite trips were to Niagara Falls when I was 10, numerous trips to the mountains of NC and the beaches of SC (we’re from SC). We just never knew where she’d end up going! It was always fun to see new places with them.

Driving to Canada with my best friend
I love to travel so there are many wonderful memories of many great places. Since its the holiday season, my favorite place to go this time of year is to Williamsburg, VA. It’s usually cold there this time of year and we visit many shops in the historic village until we get to one where we get a cup of hot spiced cider and a warm gingerbread cookie. In the evening, there are great historic pubs to visit and eat at, lots of activities (like Christmas concerts), and everything is decorated beautifully for the season. A great place to get in the spirit.
